A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
