Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
