The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
